Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a bad certificate and why is it blocking me from accessing a Web site?

A: Web site certificates are designed to both encrypt the traffic between your browser and a Web site as well as make sure that you are communicating with the Web site you intended. Included in that Web site certificate is a number of different pieces of information such as the Web address, or URL, expiration date, and certifying authority who verified this Web site was actually who they said they were. If any of these pieces of information are out of synch with the site you are attempting to contact, it may be due to a malicious individual attempting to fool you into revealing your personal information to them. For example, if I access https://woodgrovebank.com and everything works fine, I can be certain that I was communicating with the valid owner of that URL. However, if that certificate is stolen or is no longer valid, that URL and Web site combination cannot be guaranteed to be secure. As a result, Internet Explorer will automatically block you from accessing the site. If you have seen this on a site you know to be valid, please contact the site administrator to update their Web site certificates as soon as possible.
